Statement from Rep. McAuliffe on Graduated Income Tax Vote

Springfield, IL…. State Representative Michael McAuliffe (R-Chicago) issued the following statement after the House narrowly approved SJRCA 1 to remove the flat tax provision in the Illinois Constitution:

“Today’s vote was a confirmation that the Illinois General Assembly does not seriously care about the middle class and small business owners. This amendment is regrettably and erroneously being marketed as a 97% tax cut. The reality is that what we will put to the voters contains no set rates, instead it will remove one of the last remaining protections for Illinois taxpayers, the flat income tax. Should this amendment pass, it will allow the General Assembly to set whatever rates impacting whatever sections of the populace they would like subject only to the whim of the barest majority. Today’s vote was not about responsible reforms, if that were the case, then we would open up the Illinois Constitution to address redistricting or term limits. Illinois has tried time and again to spend, tax, and borrow it’s way to prosperity and it’s clear that’s not working. The answer to our inability to manage our finances is not to throw more of our hardworking taxpayer’s dollars on the fire.”
